Four altruistic highly motivated girls make up the East Lyme Middle School Service Club. They are (from left to right) Jaylyn Mueller, Emma Ayala, Isabella Mazzi and Erin Munch. Led by Ms. Kathleen Kuvalanka, a teacher at ELMS, the girls chose to help other students as their service project this year. They considered donating backpacks filled with school supplies to one of many national groups that support students. Ms. Kuvalanka helped them to narrow their focus and consider helping local students since more people might be willing to contribute to a fundraiser that would benefit local students.

The girls agreed and Ms. Kuvalanka contacted the NLPS Central Office, shared the Club's goal and was referred to the social worker at NHAM. We were touched that students wanted to help other students. When Ms. Kuvalanka shared the project the girls came up with, we explained that we often receive backpacks from other agencies. Our students are supplied with pencils, crayons, erasers, scissors, agendas and other items needed for the school day. We asked if they would consider donating several packages of underwear and perhaps some sweat pants since these are items that our school nurse needs and our current supply is almost depleted.

The girls worked diligently to raise money for their service project. They contacted local businesses to solicit funds or gift cards and had a school wide fundraiser. During the week long school fundraiser,  students who contributed $1.00 were allowed to wear pajamas to school on Friday of that week. In addition, for each dollar that a student contributed, they received a voucher that would enter them in a drawing  to have a chance to win a gift card of their choice.

On Monday, June 6, Cheryl Potter (our school's social worker) was invited to meet the girls at ELMS and to pick up the items that they purchased. She was overwhelmed to learn that the girls raised hundreds of dollars. In addition to purchasing six packages of underwear (52 pairs), they purchased a total of 37 blue school uniform pants in a variety of sizes!

Our students will benefit from the thoughtfulness and generosity of the girls in the ELMS Service Club.
